Merck Manual refereert aan een serie, in boekvorm en online, medische en wetenschappelijke naslagwerken voor artsen, patiënten en geïnteresseerde leken.
De uitgaven worden door Merck, een groot farmaceutisch bedrijf
(buiten de US en Canada 'MSD' genaamd, wiki)
zonder winstoogmerk gemaakt en de online versies worden gratis beschikbaar gesteld.
De boeken en de online versies worden onafhankelijk van Merck ontwikkeld door comités van artsen en andere deskundigen, waardoor onafhankelijkheid gegarandeerd is.
Bovendien worden, zoals in ieder medisch handboek, in de tekst enkel generieke namen voor medicijnen gebruikt en nooit merknamen.
De Merck Manuals staan in de medische wereld ook bekend als relatief goedkoop vergeleken met soortgelijke werken zoals:
Davidson. Principles and Practice of Medicine,
Harrison's Manual of Medicine,
Oxford Handbook of Clinical Medicine.
N.B. Bladeren en lezen in boeken is prettiger dan op websites, maar boeken hebben het nadeel dat het nieuws van vandaag morgen alweer achterhaald kan zijn. Een boek loopt dus vaak achter de actualiteit aan. De websites van de Merck Manuals hebben dat nadeel niet. Artikelen daarin worden regelmatig geupdate. In die websites zijn dus altijd de laatste ontwikkelingen en meningen te lezen.

The Merck Manual Home Health Handbook. Engelstalig, paperback, ISBN 9781118115428, Publisher Wiley, Third edition (October 1, 2011), 2352 pagina's. The Merck Manual of Medical Information – Home Edition was published in 1997 and was a re-edited version of the Professional version using less technical language intended for patients, caregivers and people interested in medical topics without training in health fields. This edition sold over 2 million copies. The Second Home Edition was released in 2003, and the third edition was published in 2009 as The Merck Manual Home Health Handbook, and sold over 4 million copies. Since 2015 the Consumer version content is available only via the online Merck Manual website. First published in 1990, sections of The Merck Manual were made into a separate volume dealing with diseases and management of illnesses in the elderly. It has gone through three print editions, the last version published in 2000. Since the transition of The Merck Manual in 2015 to a web only based version, the Manual of Geriatrics is accessible through the Professional and Consumer portals of the online text.
