Passed away Sunday, February 27, 2011. Anne was born March 25, 1921 in Kalamazoo, the daughter of Emmo and Tina (Mejeur) Sportel and was a lifelong resident of Kalamazoo. She was a member of Second Christian Reformed Church, had worked for the Bryant Paper Company for many years and cleaned houses for several families in the Kalamazoo area for over 20 years. On December 4, 1940, she married Charles King, who preceded her in death on May 6, 1971. She was also preceded by her parents; her step-mother, Anna Sportel; a daughter and son-in-law, Doris and Bob Talsma; a brother, Henry Sportel; two brothers-in-law, Henry Post and Carl Flamm; a sister-in-law, Millie Sportel. Anne is survived by her daughters, Char (Paul) Vander Kley of Kalamazoo, Janice (Frank) Gibson of Greenfield, TN and Grace (Mark) Ritsema of Mattawan; 12 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren; two sisters, Henrietta Post and Bea Flamm; two brothers, Garry (Evelyn) Sportel and Art (Jan) Sportel; many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 11:00 AM in the Second Christian Reformed Church, 3015 Nichols Road, with Rev. Dr. Warren E. Lammers, officiating. Interment will take place at Mt. Cremation has taken place. Grace was born April 27,1958 in Kalamazoo, the daughter of Charles and Anne (Sportel) King and was a resident of Mattawan. On March 10, 1978 she was united in marriage to Mark A. Ritsema who survives. Also surviving are 3 children: Andrea Rose of Wyoming, Jeremy (Melissa) Ritsema of Paw Paw, and Zachary (Kasey) Ritsema of Portage; 6 grandchildren; sister: Janice (Frank) Gibson of Greenfield, TN; brother-in-law: Paul Vander Klye of Kalamazoo; and several nieces and nephews. Grace was a member of Calvary Reformed Church of Mattawan where she was middle school youth leader, Women of the Bible leader, Operation Christmas Child leader, and participated in many other activities within the church. Grace retired from Borgess Medical Center after 38 years of service as a Registered Nurse. Grace loved spending time with her children and grandchildren, teaching them new things each time they met. Grace loved working with flowers, sewing, knitting, crocheting, watching the wildlife in the back yard, traveling to Alaska and Florida with Mark, riding ATVs, and boating. She also loved reading God's word and studying His word with others. She cherished her many friends who she loved. Grace is preceded in death by her parents; a brother-in-law: Robert Talsma; sisters: Doris Talsma and Char Vander Klye; and father-in-law: Robin Ritsema. (Vander Kley, Charlene 10/18/1945 - 4/10/2015 Kalamazoo, MI Passed away on Friday, April 10, 2015 at Borgess Hospital. Age 69. Charlene was born in Kalamazoo on October 18, 1945, the daughter of the late Charles and Anne (Sportel) King. She graduated from Kalamazoo Christian High School. She was baptized at Second Christian Reformed Church, where she was a faithful member. She enjoyed arts and crafts, especially crocheting, knitting and wood painting. She also enjoyed working as a beautician for family and friends out of her home. Charlene is survived by her loving husband of 47 years, Paul W. Vander Kley; two sons, Christopher (Teri) Vander Kley and Paul (Carrie) Vander Kley; three grandchildren, Dylan, Cora and Peter; two sisters, Janice (Frank) Gibson and Grace (Mark) Ritsema; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Doris Talsma and a brother-in-law, Robert Talsma. Cremation has taken place. He was born November 20, 1957 in Kalamazoo to the late Henry and Henrietta (Alphenaar) Sportel. Joel was united in marriage to Deia McCormick on October 12, 1985, she survives. Joel loved sports and was an avid golfer, bowler and managed and played recreational softball for many years. He worked for Kalamazoo College for 36 years and was the grounds and fleet manager at the time of his passing. Joel also attended Northpoint Church where he loved to hear his daughter sing with the worship band. Also surviving Joel are his daughter, Jori Sportel of Kalamazoo; brother, Jim (Roberta) Sportel; sisters, Joyce (Wilbur) Maas and Judy (Tim) Baker; mother-in-law, Margaret McCormick; brothers and sisters-in-law, Mark and Darla Pilbeam and Randy and Dawn Gauna; and several nieces and nephews. In early years, Garry had learned his father's trade and was a self-employed cement contractor, operating Sportel Brothers Concrete for many years. He was a member of the Covenant United Reformed Church; a former board member of Park Village Pines and North Christian School and throughout the years he had volunteered for many special concrete projects. He enjoyed bowling and truly enjoyed his home away from home "Peaceful Road Farms" in Martin. In 1948, he was united in marriage to the former Mildred Smit who preceded him in death in 2002. He was also preceded in death by his son, Bruce Sportel in 1965; by his stepmother, Anna (Mejeur) Sportel and by siblings, Anne King and Henry Sportel. On June 18, 2004, he was united in marriage to the former Evelyn DeKoekKoek who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Paula Sportel and Amy (Jim) Burns all of Kalamazoo; grandchildren, Drexton Sportel, Alyssa, Jordan and Joshua Burns; siblings, Henrietta Post, Arthur (Janette) Sportel and Bea Flamm; and many nieces and nephews.
