Top Gear verscheen voor het eerst op televisie in 1977 en met de inbreng van Jeremy Clarkson in de jaren ’90 werd het programma meer humoristisch en controversieel. In 2002 verzon Andy Wilman samen met Clarkson een nieuwe formule voor Top Gear. Er werden twee andere presentatoren geïntroduceerd, Richard Hammond en James May, en het programma groeide uit tot de meest populaire autoshow ter wereld. Deze succesvolle formule duurde 22 seizoenen, maar in 2015 werd Jeremy Clarkson ontslagen bij de BBC omdat hij een producer had geslagen. May en Hammond gaven aan Top Gear niet zonder Clarkson te willen presenteren en vertrokken eveneens bij de BBC. Het trio presenteert nu The Grand Tour

Jeremy shows a review he recorded back in January of the Jaguar X-Type Estate (Stationwagon) in snow. The age old question of which is faster, a Subaru Impreza or a Mitsubishi Evo, is answered again with the Subaru Impreza WRX STi WR1 and the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII MR. James and Richard play darts with some cars and a cannon. Jeremy drives the Porsche Carrera GT followed by the Stig taking it around the Top Gear test track. TVR T350C, waarmee Richard racet tegen een Harrier. De Stig rijdt een ronde in een tijd van 1:27. Hij werd vergeleken met een Noble M12. Nieuws: nieuwe Opel Astra, Goodward festival of speed, SLR MClaren. Review: Jeremy rijdt met een Volkswagen Phaeton, welke hij omschrijft als comfortabel, lekker om te rijden en het is zo goed als onmogelijk om de ramen te laten beslaan. Star in a Reasonably priced Car: Alan Davies praat over hoe het is om te rijden met Steve Coogan. Hij gaat rond in de Liana in 1:54. Review: James reviewt de 1000 pk sterke, 13.6 liter Cadillac Sixteen concept car. De presentatoren zijn het eens dat het de beste Cadilliac is sinds 1966. Reviews: Een door Overfinch getunede Range Rover racet tegen een Mercedes SLK320 en wint. Echter de Range Rover rijdt op gras en de Mercedes op asfalt. Hij rijdt de traagste "snelle ronde" tot nu toe, 1:44. Dit was de eerste keer dat de Stig bekende bang te zijn in een auto. Challenge: Eerder dat seizoen daagde Clarkson de CEO van Land Rover. Hij zou zes maanden met een Range Rover rijden zonder dat hij stuk ging, anders zou hij de hond van de CEO ombrengen. Jeremy laat zien hoe hij de Range Rover heeft getest. Aan het einde van de zes maanden breekt een hendeltje af maar dit wordt niet ernstig genoeg bevonden en de hond overleeft.

Na een dag rijden zegt hij het een van de meest uitputtende auto's te vinden. Ook bekritiseerd hij de kwaliteit van de auto. Nieuws: 350Z horloge, crashtest nieuwe Espace, verbod op mobiele telefoon tijdens rijden. Hoofdreview: Alfa Romeo 147. Jeremy rijdt in een drag race tegen een Golf R32 en een Focus RS. De Alfa Romeo wint met gemak maar Clarkson merkt op dat het chassis van de Alfa nogal wiebelig aanvoelt. Hij noemt de Alfa krankzinnig en je zou wel krankzinnig zijn om hem te kopen aldus Jeremy Clarkson. Hij raadt de Golf R32 aan voor dagelijks gebruik maar geeft toe dat hij ook van de Alfa houdt. De Stig zet in de Alfa een tijd neer van 1:35.6, trager dan zowel de Focus als de Golf. Clarkson test de Koenigsegg CC8 die met een topsnelheid van 389 km/h destijds de snelste productieauto was. Hij deed een snelheidstest op het circuit, het voormalige record stond op naam van de Pagani Zonda (274 km/h). De Koenigsegg verbreekt dit door 280 km/h te halen. Later bekend Clarkson dat hij nogal nerveus was omdat de medewerkers van Koenigsegg vroegen om de ruitenwisser vast te tapen. De Stig rijdt een tijd van 1:23.9, slecht een tiende seconde trager dan de Zonda. Veiligheid: Hammond test de nieuwe Renault Megane in Londen. Vervolgens brengt hij hem naar het Top Gear circuit waar de veiligheid wordt getest door een echt persoon te laten crashen met 50 km/h tegen een stilstaande andere auto. De bestuurder is ongedeerd en kan zelf uit de auto stappen. De Stig rijdt 1:28.9 met de Evo (sneller dan een Murcielago) en 1:30.1 met de Impreza. Review: Clarkson kijkt naar de Vauxhall VX220 Turbo. De Stig weet rond te gaan in 1:31.3 op een droge baan. Uitdaging: Richard Hammond gaat naar een circuit dag met de nieuwe Peugeot 206 GTi en heeft een heerlijke dag. Race: De Stig racet vijf circuit auto's voor op de weg en kijkt welke de snelste is. 5: Lotus Elise Sport - 1:28.2; 4: Caterham R400 - 1:25.0; 3: Ariel Atom 2 - 1:24.0; 2: Westfield XTR2 - 1:23.2; 1: Radical SR3 - 1:19.8. Star in a Reasonably Priced Car: Jeremy speelt Countdown, een woordenspel, met Richard Whitely. Whitely rijdt de traagste tijd ooit in de Liana: 2:06.0. Voordelige auto's: Een kleine facelift van een auto kan een hoop geld schelen bij de aankoop van een nieuwe auto.

Jeremy Clarkson kijkt naar de Porsche 911 Turbo. Hij vindt het een geweldige auto die beter is dan de Ferrari F355. De Stig rijdt met een Turbo een rondetijd van 1:31.0 op een natte baan. Ook kijkt hij naar de Porsche 911 C4S. Uitdaging: Kan een Ford World Rally team bijna alle onderdelen aan de Focus rallyauto vervangen in de tijd dat een groep vrouwen zich klaar maakt voor een avondje uit. Het lukt ze makkelijk. Star in a Reasonably Priced Car: Anne Robinson bespreekt waarom ze de Audi TT cool vindt en waarom haar Mercedes SL beter is dan die van Jeremy. Ze haalt 1:57 in de Liana. Ontmoeting: Richard ontmoet een Lotus ingenieur die een auto in zijn keuken heeft gebouwd en daarom nu de achtermuur moet afbreken. Review: James vergelijkt de Ford Ka en de Triumph TR6. Main Review: Jeremy bekijkt de Renault Clio V6, hij zegt dat deze auto thuishoort in zijn Perfect 10 Garage. De Stig rijdt 1:36.2 op een hele natte baan.

Clarkson kijkt kort naar het nieuwe prototype van Jaguar; de R Coupe. May laat de Jaguar C-type zien die in 1953 Le Mans won en Hammond rijdt met een Jaguar Mark 2 uit 1960. Nieuws: Clarkson is onder indruk van de nieuwe Astra, Ferrari 360 Challenge Stradale, Rover en hun beloften, betrouwbaarheid van automerken, James May is uitgenodigd voor het opening van een parkeergarage. Star in a Reasonably Priced Car: Boris Johnson vertelt over zijn liefde voor fietsen en zijn column in GQ magzine. Johnson haalde 1:56 in de Liana. Review: De nieuwe Jaguar XJ wordt aan de tand gevoeld. Clarkson gaat kijken hoe ver hij moet rijden voordat hij verveeld en geirriteerd raakt. Hij is erg onder indruk van het gevoel dat de auto je geeft. Cool Wall: Er wordt gekeken naar de XJ voor de Cool Walll Cool: Een zwarte Jaguar XJR Uncool: Standaard Jaguar XJ Review: Clarkson rijdt met de Jaguar XKR-R, de race versie van de XKR voordat hij een Aston Martin DB7 GT het circuit op neemt. De Stig gaat rond in een tijd van 1:30.4 in de DB7 en Clarkson zegt dat het een van de beste auto's van de afgelopen jaren is.

 2003-may-25   02-03 

Clarkson rijdt met de Volkswagen Touareg en is onder de indruk van de motor. De ophanging valt echter erg tegen. Je hebt 2 standen; sport, waarbij je tanden uit je mond vallen en comfort, waarbij je kinderen in je nek kotsen. Review: Het presentatorstrio gaat op zoek naar slechte auto's. Hammond gaat rijden met wat ze kenmerken als de slechtste auto, de Lexus SC430. Hij rijdt vervolgens ook met de Hyundai Coupe en merkt op dat het Hyundai, een fabrikant die niet bekend staat om sportauto's beter is gelukt dan het grote Lexus. Ook is de Hyundai slechts de helft van de prijs. Nieuws: Citroen C2, Porsche GT2, Porsche Carrera GT, Bristol Fighter, lelijke modificaties. Review: James rijdt met de Perodua Kelisa. Hij rijdt zacht en is makkelijk te besturen. Echter volgens James en Hammon wil niemand hem hebben omdat de naam lijkt op een ziekte. Uitdaging: De snelste supercar ter wereld. Een leeggehaalde Jaguar XJS neemt het op tegen een Chevrolet Corvette, een Ferrari 360, Porsche 911 Turbo, een Venturi Atlantique en een Honda NSX voor een dragrace. De Jaguar, met nitrous injectie, werd opgekrikt tot 500pk en wist de race te winnen. Star in a Reasonably priced car: David Soul van Starsky en Hutch is de eerste Amerikaanse gast en ook de eerste die 2 Liana's stuk wist te maken. Hij zette een tijd neer van 1:54 ondanks het feit dat zijn versnellingsbak 100m lang niet werkte. tot Souls's teleurstelling was hij niet in staat sneller te gaan omdat hij niet gewend was aan het stuur dat aan de andere kant zit. Als hij meer tijd had gehad om te wennen had hij eerste kunnen worden volgens de Stig. Review: Jeremy rijdt met de nieuwe BMW Z8 Alpina. Ondanks het feit dat Alpina aan auto heeft gesleuteld rijdt hij nog steeds erg lastig. Een slechte auto zal altijd slecht blijven. Desondanks haalde hij een goede tijd op het circuit: 1:29.

Jeremy rijdt in de nieuwe Rolls-Royce Phanton op het eiland Hull. Hij is buitensporig luxueus en wat Clarkson vooral leuk vindt is de paraplu die verstopt zit in de deur. Review: Richard rijdt met de Rover P5 van de Koningin. Star in a Reasonably Priced Car: Kok Jamie Oliver gaat de uitdaging aan om een salade te maken achterin zijn camper terwijl hij wordt rondgereden door de Stig. Het wilde niet lukken. Hij wilde graag collega Gordon Ramsay verslaan in de Suzuki Liana en klokte dezelfde tijd: 1:50. Uitdaging: Richard besluit het parlement te herschikken aan de hand van de rondetijden van de politieke partijen. Ze gaan rond in een MG ZR. Dit zijn de resultaten: 6. Looney Party - 2:13; 5. Conservatives - 1:41.8; 4. Green Party - 1:41; 3. Labour Party - 1:38.8; 2. Legalised Cannabis Alliance - 1:36.5; 1. Liberal Democrats - 1:33.9 De winnaar kreeg als prijs een voorstoel uit een Volvo. Nieuws: Busboot om Londen te ontlasten, motorflirten, BMW 5-serie, Lexus RX300 Review: Een vergelijk tussen de Audi S4 en de BMW M3. Op het circuit haalde de M3 1:31.8 en de A4 was sneller met 1:30.9. Clarkson heeft liever de M3 voor een dag op het circuit maar zou de S4 nemen als het om dagelijk gebruik zou gaan. Clarkson kijkt naar de Smart Roadster en zegt dat hij goed rijdt ondanks trage acceleratie en een lage topsnelheid. De ersnellingsbak reageert traag en het duur een paar seconden voordat er van versnelling wordt veranderd. Jeremy is onder de indruk van de prijs en wat je voor die prijs krijgt. Ook de Volkswagen Beetle en de Ford Street Ka worden bekeken. Cool Wall: De Renault Avantime wordt van de Cool Wall gehaald omdat hij niet meer wordt gemaakt. Cool: = Volkswagen New Beetle, Ford Street Ka Subzero: Smart Roadster Uitdaging: Hammond gebruikt een drag racer om een Nissan Sunny in de fik te steken omdat hij het de slechste auto aller tijden vindt. Even later gaat een caravan ook in vlammen op. Star in a Reasonably Priced Car: Vinnie Jones rijdt een tijd van 1:53. Review: De nieuwe presentator James May reviewt zijn eigen Bentley T2, die naar eigen zeggen zijn leven heeft verwoest vanwege zeer hoog benzineverbruik en het moeten huren van een aparte garage voor de auto. Clarkson vindt het leuk dat de hele auto meedeind als je erop gaat zitten. Nieuws: Peugeot 206 GTI (station), Renault Kangoo, Saab 9-3 cabriolet, Lamborghini Gallardo. Review: Richard Hammond rijdt met de Bowler Wildcat en raakt overweldigd door de emoties tijdens de rit en noemt zichzelf de "driving god" tot vermaak van Clarkson en May. Op het circuit weet de Bowler 1:39 te klokken.

Star in a Reasonably Priced Car: Gordon Ramsay, hij zet een tijd naar van 1:50. Cool Wall: Grote personenauto's worden besproken. Uncool: Renault Espace, Citroen C8, Toyota Previa, Seat Alhambra, Peugeot 807, Crysler Voyager Serious uncool: Hyundai & Kia Uitdaging: Als je alle onnodige onderdelen uit een auto sloopt, zou hij dan sneller gaan? Een "gestripte" Jaguar XJS blijkt zeven seconden sneller te rijden op het circuit. Bekeken: Hete hatchbacks; VW Golf R32, Ford Focus RS, Honda Civic Type-R, en SEAT Leon Cupra R. De Stig gaat rond met de Focus RS met een tijd van 1:32. De R32 komt tot 1:33.

Maserati 3200GT De Stig rijdt een tijd van 1:38.0 (zeer nat circuit). Review: Clarkson bekijkt de Audi RS6 en de Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG, hij heeft liever de Audi omdat die ruiger is. Supermini vergelijking:Ford Fiesta vs. Citroën C3 vs. Honda Jazz vs. Nissan Micra vs. MG ZR Uitdaging: Bestelbus-bestuurders racen een Ford Transit Rally Edition rond het Top Gear-circuit. Nieuws: Nieuwe Citroën Berlingo, 200pk Astra, Audi TT DSG, parkeren Star in a Reasonably Priced Car: Michael Gambons manier van het nemen van de laatste bocht zorgt ervoor dat die naar hem vernoemd wordt. Hij klokte een tijd van 1:55 (nat circuit). Extra uitdaging: Een Lada wordt opgeknapt door Lotus.

Hammond's review: Hammond rijdt in een Saab 9-3 op de manier die de overheid aanraadt als zijnde "vriendelijk voor het milieu. Nieuws: Daihatsu Copen, Brabus Mercedes-Benz SL55 AMG, auto's met een 5-sterren score in de Euro NCAP veiligheids test. Dawe's Review: Jason Dawe rijdt met een aantal supercars naar een basisschool om de meningen te peilen van kinderen. Als winnaar komt de Lamborghini Diablo naar voren. Korte reviewes: Peugeot RC, Ford TH!NK, dieselmotoren, Toyota Prius, LPG auto's Clarksons review: Clarkson rijdt met een Lotus Elise en laat zien hoe het niet moet. Vervolgens krijgt hij een les hoe het wel moet. De Stig rijdt met de Lotus een tijd van 1:35.6 (nat circuit). Cool wall: Cool wall wordt weer doorgenomen. Seriously uncool: Toyota Prius Uncool: Golf (benzine) Cool: Golf (benzine), Saab 9-3 Star in a Reasonably Priced Car: Rick Parfitt komt terug op zijn voorliefde voor Porsche en zijn "Boy racer" motor. Hij zet een tijd van 1:52. Handel: Fiat Stilo, Ford Ka, Isuzu Trooper Uitdaging: Er wordt gezocht naar het "Snelste geloof". Deelnemders zijn een rooms-katholieke priester, een Joodse rabbijn, een Boeddhistische lama, een Anglicaanse priester, een protestante Bischop en een Hare Krishna volgeling. Ze rijden allemaal met een getunede Subaru Impreza WRX STI. De Anglicaanse priester wist de snelste tijd neer te zetten.

Japanse beslissing: Honda probeert uit te vinden of ze de NSX moeten verkopen in Groot-Brittannië. Top Gear werd opgebeld met de vraag om de Stig een ronde te laten rijden, zijn tijd: 1:33.7. Clarksons review: Clarkson rijdt met de vreemde Renault Vel Satis door Swindon. Nieuws: Nissan keert terug naar de motorsport, Mazda MX-5, 2 Fast 2 Furious/Hyundai Elantra, Renault Vel Satis Hammond's review: Hammond rijdt met de nieuwe BMW Z4 in Portugal. Cool Wall: Introductie van de Cool Wall, waar een verschil wordt gemaakt tussen; Seriously Uncool, Uncool, Cool, en Sub-Zero. Er worden meteen een hoop auto's op geplaatst. Seriously Uncool: Chrysler PT Cruiser, Volkswagen Beetle, Audi TT Uncool: Hyundai Coupe, Honda Civic, Ferrari 360, BMW Z3, BMW X5, Lexus IS Cool: Range Rover, Citroen C3, Audi A2, BMW Z4, Fiat Multipla Subzero: Mini, Aston Martin Vanquish, Land Rover Defender, Renault Avantime Uitdaging: Dawe gaat met de oma's proberen om te parkeren met de handrem in een nieuwe Mini. Star in a reasonably priced car: Tara Palmer-Tomkinson wordt herrinerd aan haar vorige bezoek aan Top Gear (oude formaat) en wordt ondervraagd over haar rijstijl. Haar tijd is 1:54. Dawe's review: Dawe kijkt naar gebruikte Volkswagen Golfs. Clarksons tweede review: Clarkson rijdt in zijn eigen Mercedes-Benz SL55 AMG op het circuit maar doet dit wel voorzichtig. Hammond merkt op dat op een homowebsite de auto te boek staat als 4e meest homo-achtige auto. Hammond steelt de auto en geeft hem aan de Stig voor een rondetijd. De Stig zet een tijd van 1:33.0 (zeer nat circuit).

 2002-nov-17   01-05 

Mercedes-Benz S-Klasse. Na een korte geschiedenis les ("97% van alle overheden hebben een S-klasse" en "Geen Afrikaanse leider wil gezien worden in minder dan den S-klasse") faalt Clarkson om de auto te testen omdat hij de spraakcomputer niet naar zijn wil kan buigen. Vervolgens gaat hij rijden in een Audi A8 waarin hij tot de conclusie komt dat de A8 meer een sportieve dan luxueuze auto is. Nieuws: De nieuwe Nissan Almera, nieuwe Nissan 350Z, ideeën voor verkeersveiligheid worden besproken Dawe's review: Dawe kijkt naar een gebruikte Peugeot 206. Star in a reasonably priced car: Jonathan Ross wordt gestraft voor het afsnijden van de Hammerhead bocht en krijgt een tijd van 1:57 (nat circuit) Review: Hammond gaat naar Duitsland om zich rond te laten rijden in een Maybach 62 en probeert de gadgets van de auto uit. 'Review: Clarkson test de nieuwe Bentley Arnage en scheurt met de auto op het Top Gear Circuit. De Stig weet 1:40.8 (nat circuit) uit de luxe auto te persen. Uitdaging: Maak van een "gewone" auto een James Bond auto voor minder dan 300 pond. Het resultaat bestaat uit een aantal wijzigingen die lijken op een goedkope kopie van de echte James Bond-auto's.

 2002-nov-10   01-04 

Om de première van de nieuwe James Bondfilm Die Another Day te vieren wordt er een race gehouden tussen twee klassieke Bondmerken; een Aston Martin Vanquish en een Ferrari 575 (met Damon Hill in de 575). Tijden: Ferrari 1:35.2, Aston Martin 1:36.2. De reden voor de slechte tijden was dat het één van de natste dagen ooit was op het Top Gearcircuit. Test: De presentatoren racen met 3 midden-klasse 2.0 liter familie sedans in de 'Midden-klasse Olympische spelen', de Ford Mondeo komt als snelste uit de bus. Star in a Reasonably Priced Car: Steve Coogan, met een tijd van 1:54.0 (nat circuit).

 2002-nov-03   01-03 

Mini Cooper. Review: Clarkson en Hammond discussiëren over de "mooiste auto aller tijden", Hammond stond achter de Porsche 928 en de Citroën DS terwijl Clarkson zijn stem gaf aan de Lamborghini Miura en tot verrassing van iedereen, de Aston Martin DB7. Uitdaging: Oma's proberen een donut te draaien met een Honda S2000 Star in a Reasonably Priced Car: Ross Kemp, hij zette een tijd neer van 1:54 (nat circuit). Power Lap: De Pagani Zonda neemt het op tegen de Westfield XTR2 in een race. De XTR verslaat de Zonda met 1.2 seconden maar Clarkson weigert de auto op het bord te zetten omdat hij niet cool was en een motor van een motorfiets heeft.

 2002-oct-27   01-02 

De Stig test de Ford Focus RS op het circuit tegen zijn grootste rivalen, de Subaru Impreza en de Honda Civic Type-R. De Impreza gaat rond in 1:38.6 en de Civic in 1:36.5. De Focus verslaat verrassend de anderen met een tijd van 1:33.8. Clarkson rijdt de Focus RS op de lege wegen van Wales. Afgezien van een positieve beoordeling vond ergerde Clarkson zich aan het differentieel dat de auto 'onbestuurbaar' maakte. Nieuws: Mazda onthulde de RX-8, Volkswagen de Touareg. Hoofdreview: Noble M12. Ondanks de gigantische draaicirkel, krakkemikkige remlichten en ramen die niet helemaal open gaan vindt Clarkson de auto geweldig vanwege zijn perfecte rijgedrag, vermogen en het ontbreken van onderstuur. De Stig zet een rondetijd neer van 1:33.1. Star in a reasonably priced car: Jay Kay, leadzanger van de band Jamiroquai speelt een spelletje met Clarkson waarbij hij probeert auto's te identificeren aan de hand van onderdelen. Hij rijdt zijn ronde in de Liana in 1:48.0. Review: Hammond werpt een blik op de droomauto uit zijn kindertijd, een Ford Escort Rally-editie. Uitdaging: Hammond wil weten over hoeveel motoren een dubbeldekkerbus kan springen.

 2002-oct-20   01-01 

Jeremy Clarkson bespreekt de Citroën Berlingo en vindt het een betaalbare kleine auto met karakter en veel opbergruimte. Recensie: Hij vergelijkt ook de Pagani Zonda en de Lamborghini Murcuélago. Hij adoreerde de Zonda en noemde hem de koning van de supercars. Vervolgens werd The Stig geïntroduceerd, zijn enige doel is het neerzetten van rondetijden. De Zonda haalde een tijd van 1:23 rond het Top Gear circuit en de Murciélago klokte 1:29. Review: Richard Hammond bekijkt een Mazda 6, Mazda's poging tot het maken van een sport sedan. Hij was verrassend strak in de bochten maar nog steeds geen geweldige sportsedan. Nieuws: Ford GT40 Concept, Fiat Stilo Station, nieuwe Nissan Micra, Smart Roadster, Bentley Continental GT, en Clarksons mening over Formule 1. Uitdaging: De Stig moest snel genoeg rijden om ongezien langs een snelheidscamera te komen. Na pogingen in een Honda Civic Type R (207 km/h) en een Mercedes CL55 AMG (238 km/h) lukte het hem uiteindelijk in een TVR Tuscan met 273 km/h. Star in a Reasonably Priced Car: Harry Enfield, hij zet een langzame tijd van 2:01 in de Suzuki Liana. Uitdaging: Clarkson kijkt naar biodiesel en test het gebruik met een Volvo 740.
